As someone who's worked in downtown Wsmpt. for nearly 50 years, I've seen a lot of changes. Some of the most disheartening ones were when many retailers left for the mall & surrounding areas. The city went into a decline. Several attempts to bring it back were not successful. Now with gas prices so high and the mall so far, I look forward to taking in a movie and shopping for gifts and necessities in downtown once again. It is a start. We need to reclaim the real estate. Worst case senerio - If you want to be part of the problem, let your fears keep you away. Be part of the solution, you will outnumber the bad eggs and reclaim the reputation of a wonderful city. I have hope that the Cinema Center & Kohl's will help us to grow once again.

I don't think anyone is really afraid of the downtown, maybe they just avoid it due to all the traffic. Williamsport is a friendly town with alot of entertaining people.

How about posting number of votes and percentages? It seems someone at S-G is playing with numbers. It went from 49% to 47% drive through, yet, the other percentages did not change.

I just hate the traffic patterns in downtown, so I avoid it by taking the Beltway, when its open. Otherwise, its High Street, Washington Boulevard and Third Street. If I do have to go downtown, parking is at a premium and crossing streets is a life-altering experience. And, those of you, on here, alluding to or using the F-word, does not help my perception of Williamsport being a friendly town.

Port "FormerKing, obviously you are slow...so let me put it in terms you may be able to understand.... Downtown + Drugs + Criminals - Cops = Crime." Tell me just how much crime there is downtown. The police station is right across the f'ing street from the theater. Do you have any idea how many times the cops drive by that theater every night?

Taralynn--yay! You tell 'em. These idiots act all scared and stuff and promote racist agendas. I, too, go downtown quite often and have never had a problem. Yes, there are bad neighborhoods, but it ain't downtown. I know that there are folks from surrounding areas that will not come to Billtown because they are convinced they will be harmed. This is crazy.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at people like you. I'll be*******if I'm gonna be a prisoner in my home. I can't believe some of you actually think that if you go downtown that someone is gonna rob, shoot, or kill you. Seriously people come on there is NO ONE downtown. I've lived here all my life and have yet to hear about a murder that has occurred downtown. You can stay in your homes but I'd rather go out and enjoy myself and take advantage of what little there is to do in the town.

And I will give you this. Downtown isn't the problem. It's the neighborhoods. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a Rhodes scholar to figure out which ones.Walk around in these neighborhoods at night and see how far you get. Unless of course you get yourself a big white T shirt. The truth sometimes hurts, but that doesn't make it not true. You can spin it any convienant way you want, but facts are facts.

Let's see, What did I do? Nothing because I just don't care to deal with it. I left a CU that I'd been dealing with for almost 20 years just to have my banking needs attended to in Newberry. Thankfully I'm only in Williamsport for 2 days a week anymore and thats enough. Occasionally I'll go visit the guys at the Walnut St Firehouse, but that's the extent of my desire to be downtown. Label me what you wish, but everybody has the right to think and act as they want.Well maybe not when I think about all the nutcases trying to get their lifestyles legitimized in todays everything goes mindset. And Yes I'm an old guy, but since when did that become a dirty word?

pressman--good points! Glad to hear something positive. I really hope things get better for the city. All the grumbling and fear doesn't help. it just reenforces our prejudices and plays on our fears. Get out and be visible.

I hate to dissapoint the naysayers out there, but I work the nightshift at a local newspaper downtown. On my lunchbreak, I walk around the building, up and down Fourth Street, along Hepburn, and the very end of Edwin. I've been doing this for years. I've never seen a single occasion of criminal activity, except for a few drivers going the wrong way on Fourth. Everone I've ever encountered I've greeted with a "hi" and almost always recieve one in return. But most of the time, the streets were barren and lonely. One could almost walk around naked and nobody would even notice. Since the cinema opened, though, it's been much busier. If you avoid downtown because someone told you it's not safe, you should go downtown and see for yourself. All of the people who keep saying they don't go downtown because isn't safe are the same people who are least likely to know the truth. I'm downtown almost every night, and I've seen for myself that it's not only safe, it's friendly.

Okay, so the "influx" goes back. Then what do you do about the homegrown idiots. We have a bunch of them, too. The bottom line is, the theatre is a start. Maybe a little positive vibe, folks?

I agree I'll never set foot in the new theater either. I know alot of other people who feel the same way.i wonder how long this theater is really going to last.what a stupid idea in the first place to build it. i like the whole idea of trying to do something with the downtown but its never going to be like state college downtown until they ship all the philly influx back.

Williamsport is unsafe. Especially since the gangs are moving to the lycoming mall targeting shoppers and threating any white person if seen after dark will be shot. Come on now, my young son wants to go to a local carnival, i told him no, b/c its unsafe.

The fact that some let criminals or the perceived criminal element "lurking about" keep them from going to the downtown allows criminals to win. So, just hide out until they go away? That is really no way to live.

what are we afraid of! are u serious!? do you live in williamsport? have you been to williamsport!? Maybe the folks in the area are afraid of, getting shot, stabbed, mugged, robbed, attacked, ran over by police/criminals in chases.. there are many number of reasons why people avoid the downtown area. You can hardly blame them for avoiding a high crime area. Get rid of the Philly Scum & the people will come to our downtown...

I agree this poll is bogus. Tons of people must drive through downtown everyday without stopping just to get from point A to point B. I wouldn't say they avoided it.

The poll is skewed. Drove through/Avoided can be any of a million things. If you drove through the downtown area to get to Bowman field, if you avoided the construction on Market Street, etc. I would not put much stock in this poll.

Personally, I am not going to put myself and family at risk to go to a movie in downtown Williamsport. Who wants to walk to their vehicle with their wife and kid at 11 pm? People have been shot just for going to a convenience store. I know that some are going to say that they odds are slim, but so is the odds of a contractor being shot in Iraq. I'll stick to the theater at the mall and dinner in another area.
