St. James Episcopal celebrates sesquicentennial
Sunday marks the 150th anniversary of the consecration of Muncy’s historic St. James Episcopal Church. The church, which was designed by the distinguished American Gothic Revival architect, Richard Upjohn (1802-1878), remains a landmark in this borough on the tree-lined Main Street. The church’s cornerstone was laid on Aug. 5, 1858, and construction continued through the succeeding months. It was consecrated on Nov. 15, 1859. A sealed box in the cornerstone contains a history of the church, a copy of the King James Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, the Journal of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church for 1857, other contemporary Episcopal documents, local and regional newspapers containing articles about the founding and building of the church, original architectural plans, a lithograph print of the projected edifice, and a collection of coins bearing the date 1858.
