First Presbyterian Church weathers 175 years strong
It has stood as a church of living stones for nearly 175 years and continues to minister to needs in the area, thanks to the dedication of its people.
First Presbyterian Church is a firmly rooted, traditional church that still hears the call of God, according to its pastor and members.
In the beginning
According to its history booklet, published for its 150th anniversary, the First Presbyterian Church actually was an offspring of Lycoming Presbyterian Church in Newberry.
The records indicate that the roots of the church formed in 1745, when the Rev. David Brainerd preached to the Native American Indians where the Sheshequin path crossed over the a trail leading up the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, approximately two miles west of Williamsport. Later, a Rev. Philip Fithian also preached to the Indians.
The Lycoming church formed later.
