Army lineman restored lines of communication
City resident Richard L. Newman didn’t have to worry very much about enemy bullets or mortar shells when he was sent to Korea. Although relations between North and South Korea were tense along the 38th Parallel, the armistice had long been signed when he enlisted in September 1954. “Most of the fighting was over when I went in,” Newman said. His tour of duty in Korea was far from being a cake walk, however. He was a lineman in charge of repairing communication lines sabotaged by communist infiltrators. Sometimes the job had to be performed during the worst weather conditions, Newman said. “The North Koreans were cutting lines and stealing gas out of the motor pools,” he said. “It wasn’t so much difficult, but it was cold and the poles were covered with ice. It was always way below zero. “We were at the top of the pole. (South Koreans) would put rolls of wire on their backs and string it out,” he said. “Americans would run it up the pole and attach it.
