Prevention, education best weapons in battle against osteoporosis, doctor says
Phyllis Douty of Loganton leads a fairly active life, despite being diagnosed six years ago with osteoporosis.
The bone disease, which makes her more susceptible than normal to fractures, doesn’t stop her from engaging in activities she enjoys.
“I walk. I have a large flower garden. I do my own housework, so I’m very active,” she said.
Like many with osteoporosis, Douty uses medication to combat it.
Some 44 million people in the U.S. are affected by osteoporosis, a disease that occurs when bone density decreases enough to allow bones to break.
While there is no cure, Douty and others are able to cope with it.
Dr. Raj Patel, an internal medicine specialist, Jersey Shore Hospital, is helping to lead the fight locally against osteoporosis. Preventive medicine, he noted, is the best means of combat.
