Lights, camera, action in city neighborhoods

No one knows for sure how much video cameras and bright lights deter criminals from their activities.

But we’re pretty sure criminals do their best work in darkness and anonymity.

So the city administration’s plans to install surveillance cameras and brighter and more lights in some Williamsport neighborhoods - announced anew this week - can do nothing but help.

There are, of course, other issues that contribute to crimes in the city, particularly those relating to violence and drugs. There needs to be tighter control of rental housing and continued vigilance to keep our schools from becoming nesting grounds for violence and drug-related crime.

But improved street lighting and surveillance cameras in selected neighborhoods are solid, on-the-ground weapons against local crime.
